A laye RE: Loading a esri ascii grid 60 Mb

Bis Nulama
Dear Andrea and Silvia,

after a long research:

it is not really clear to me where should I find the jgrass.ini file.
I work with jgrass through udig. I installed it through udig.
If I search on my hard disk I do not have any jgrass.ini file to modify...
even inside the udig folder...

(I work on windows)

Moreover after that jgrass has made its attempt to load the file othing
happens: no messages at all in the JGrass console... !

Re: A laye RE: Loading a esri ascii grid 60 Mb

Andrea Antonello
hi Laura,
these have been tough and bussy times, but if you have time now, I
could help to solve.

The udig way is an old one and we solved many issues since that releases.
Another thing would be if you are exporting the plugins and copying
them into udig.

Which version are you using?

In reply to this post by Bis Nulama

Dear Andrea and Silvia,

I used the new build (non the last one actually, but the one of the first
days of April), but I still have the same problem. My udig version is the
1.1.1 (shall I use the last one even if ti is not stable?)

I think that it is not an outofmemory since I made the memory used by JGrass
higher enough. The console does not report anything.
I still can load small-size the dem, I cannot load the big one.

If you want to "try" my file, it is the north-west area of northen Italy
SRTM 90m Digital Elevation Data, ascii format at this link:
http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp
Maybe I should try to cut the file into small pieces with any other gis
software before trying to load it into jgrass

Ok, hold on a second. You use JGrass through udig means that you
install it through the update site? We stopped supplying the update
site lots of time ago because of compatibility issues.
So I am not sure I understand where exactly your version is from. How
exactly do you install?

Ok I am downloading it. The srtm are lat long, how is it possible you
have a header (previous mail)
like that:
xllcorner     379111.1875
yllcorner     4848081.5

Anyway, you are downloading the one with liguria in it or that more north?

Andrea

Re: A laye RE: Loading a esri ascii grid 60 Mb

Andrea Antonello
Just to let you know that I downloaded the file and importaed it with
the import that you access from the right click on the mapset.
As you can see from the attached snapshot, it worked.
For this I used 1000 megabytes of memory.

Dear Andrea,

That's exactly what happens... If I try to load a small dem into the mapset it works.
If I try to load the big ones (such as the one you used) at the beginning I see the status bar "loading", then it disappears (I don't get "the file has been written succesfully" as with the small one) and nothing happens. I used  800 megabytes of memory since my computer has a ram limit of 1 Gb...
Is my computer too slow for big files?

Laura

Ah, ok, that makes sense, now everything is clear :)

Sure, that is what I did.
I imported it as esri file into the mapset and now it is there.

This one works for me with the 1000 megabytes as stated in my previous mail.

For you the same map doesn't work? I chose the one with Liguria in it.

Re: A laye RE: Loading a esri ascii grid 60 Mb

Silvia Franceschi-2
Hi Laura,
the problem is the amount of memory and not the velocity... slow can be
good at the beginning if it works.

So probably 800MB are not enough to import your bigger data...
Probably you could solve the import problem just using the gdal command
and then hope the elaborations will work even if you have only 800MB of
data.
So better would be that ones you imported the data you also change the
resolution of the DTM, if you just want to learn JGrass, and then
specific elaborations you should do on a most powerful pc.

So set the mapset as working mapset and then go in the GRASS menu ->
r.in.gdal and select your DTM and other parameters to import.

Hope this helps

Silvia
