Automated check cashing machines

Minh Nguyen-2
In the United States, there's a network of automated check cashing
machines called SAM. The machines are usually found inside grocery
stores and look like ATMs. Unlike conventional ATMs, they have no access
to the banking network: they accept checks (or traveler's checks or
money orders) and spit out cash. Whereas check cashing stores also offer
payday loans (hence shop=money_lender), these machines only cash checks,
and they aren't stores per se.

Since SAM has enough locations in the U.S., it would be a candidate for
addition to name-suggestion-index, but first I'd like to get some
feedback about the best way to tag it:

Completely OT to mapping, but how does the machine, or it's operator, know a check isn't going to bounce?

From the options you've suggested, I'd think amenity=cheque_cashing would possibly be best?

Thanks

Graeme

Re: Automated check cashing machines

Since there are check cashing shops (usually they also offer payday loans), amenity=check_cashing_machine would be more specific, for tagging a node with the precise location of the machine

But if this tag will be added to another feature, like a shop=supermarket, a tag with the structure check_cashing_machine=yes would fit the pattern of atm=yes - this tag says that the shop or other feature contains a check cashing machine.
