Your thoughts on osm.org

Martijn van Exel-3
Hi all,

Here’s something I ask myself from time to time and would like to hear other people’s thoughts about.

Imagine the openstreetmap.org home page, but without the map.
What would the home page be about instead? What would be on it?

Thanks for sharing,
Martijn

would be pretty useless....it would reduce OSM to a database to which there is no way to view an example of what it is to common folk(non-technical)

I imagine it would just be what is on wiki.osm.org with links/documentation like any other FOSS landing page: description of project, download link, about, forum link and wiki link

The page would be about the map-making community of course! About
people. Smiling faces inviting you to go out and map your neighbourhood ;)

Bye

The home page would be a curated list of the different maps and tools that are built on OSM. Ones that are meant to be more for the end user, not a reference implementation of what a map could look like. And it would detect if you are on mobile and provide a list of apps that could be downloaded for mobile devices depending on the type of app you are looking for.

I assume there would be a map, just that it would be a click away, right?

Or maybe a smaller map, with context explaining OSM and how to get involved above and below the map, and an invitation to "explore the map" by clicking on it?

I would like more focus - on [community + software tools + data ]
( but the map is also important!   Please don't remove! :)  )

imho: we need to answer the "Why OpenStreetMap?" question on the landing page.
And the answer is so different for
- hiking, railway, tourism, local patriotism, disabled people, humanitarian osm,  open data lovers.

We need to answer the
- "How you can start?"
- "The results?"

In the spirit of a thought experiment:

PRESENTATION

A small thumbnail version of the current map and then a focus on links
to map sites that the community feels are stable and a proper show-case:
national maps, specialist maps (e.g. openseamap), routing services
(perhaps with an emphasis on non-motor vehicle routing), the estoric and
unusual (for illustrative example: https://www.ukiyo-emap.com/.  I.e we
use our data in interesting and unusual ways (and do much more than
Google!).

And how about tailoring/emphasising content according to the geoip?

COLLECTION

Perhaps some new services where the focus is on very easy to use
addition of specific target data such as addresses. These could come and
go depending on need and what individual folks are doing as projects.

When HOT has an emergency response going, a section highlighting the
need and point to the task manager.

How many times have we had this discussion in the last 15 years?

And it will go absolutely no where just as all the previous incarnations
without first answering:

what is the purpose of the website that you can reach on openstreetmap.org?

Not that I expect agreement even on that.

I think it's great. You are putting the map front and centre, which to
me says "look at what we've achieved, look at what you can be a part
of".

You have to ask?  Cat content obviously:

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:Lolcat.png

Seriously though, OpenStreetMap without map might not be the best idea.

I would like to see more different maps on osm.org and to make the
standard style look better in the starting configuration when newcomers
visit the site.  Better here means better cartography and better
representation of what OSM is about.  This is challenging though which
deters many people from engaging in serious work in that field.

Creating a starting page that well represents the OSM community in its
diversity would be very hard to do with a non map/maps based design.
The likeliness that ultimately such a design caters primarily certain
special interests - if for no other reason then because it would likely
be designed in English and then translated and thereby transport a
British/American cultural preference - is very high and very difficult
to avoid.

Note a map based starting page does not mean other content is not
offered on it.  Rethinking what further content and functions are
directly accessible from the starting page makes a lot of sense.

a short video clip showing people mapping together and explaining in 3 sentences the project, finishing with links to tutorials and a big "start mapping" register button.

Simon wrote:

It is the business card of the project, the entrance to the osm universe.
It should be addressing those that are having first contact, because they are most likely to go to a generic url and are the ones we can "catch". For users it could be nice to have a kind of personizable bookmark link list prefilled with suggestions ((local) community, documentation, data download, quality control, changeset analysis, ....)

Cheers,
Martin

Something that should be immediately removed to make a space
for a map.

Why not slightly redesign the front page with a colorfull top ribbon
+ revising the content to  respond better to the public in general
and the contributors (confusion with the users !)

Hierarchical  Top/Down menu would let better structure the content for each audience and present more subjects.  Below is a rough design that could be improved.

Hi all, thanks for sharing. Some recurring / interesting topics I picked up:

* More attention to community, local groups, mapping together, the ‘people’ aspect of OSM
* Still have a map but smaller
* More information directly on or accessible from main page, for example
        * How-to / learn to map
        * What is OSM (video?)
        * Showcasing things that are made / done with OSM data
