Zip codes

John Chambers
There is a "note" in my area that says:

Unresolved note #145813

Description

bounds: (33.8871,-84.0902 - 33.8791,-84.0693)
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?box=yes&notes=yes&bbox=-84.0902%2C33.8791%2C-84.0693%2C33.8871
Map is showing wrong data here. 30044 is not Duluth, GA. This zip code should pull up Lawrenceville, GA

Created by anonymous 22 days ago

I see where the streets are tagged with zip 30044, but have no Idea where that might be associated with Duluth, GA.  Is this something in the map data, or is it a rendering problem, or is this note just garbage?  I'm confused.

Thanks,
Upstream

zip codes are a difficult problem. what came in from TIGER is
a Census Bureau approximation of zip code data and not the
real thing.

the note may or may not be correct. zip codes do not line up
in strict conformance with admin boundaries, and they have been
known to jump county and even state lines.

individual cases are basically research problems.

Re: Zip codes

Clay Smalley
To elaborate a little - ZIP code boundaries seem to be drawn according to whatever is convenient for mail delivery routes.

For example: http://www.unitedstateszipcodes.org/90010/ (you may have to zoom in once or twice to see it)

Check out 90005 and 90010. Individual addresses on either side of Wilshire Boulevard seem to be arbitrarily assigned a ZIP code. And on top of that, ZIP codes change a lot. And there are tens of thousands of them. So it's hard to get accurate information out of such a huge, non-static dataset.
