iPhone SDK issue on production app

Jordan Anderson
Hi all,

We released the Ride the City app to the App Store last week and have
had several reports of a problem that we think can be traced back to
the Cloudmade iPhone SDK.

Some users have reported that the map tiles never load on the app --
they only see the default dark gray background that is shown when map
tiles fail to load. Initially we were unable to reproduce this
ourselves, but I think we have discovered the condition required to
duplicate it.

If we start the app for the first time after it's been downloaded from
the App Store while we only have access to a cellular data network,
the map tiles are always gray even while on wi-fi. This is the
problem.

Note that if we start the app for the first time after it's been
downloaded from the App Store while we have access to wi-fi, the map
tiles download fine after that even while on a cellular data network.

This is obviously a critical problem for us to resolve. Any help would
be appreciated. I'm not the technical lead on the iPhone app so please
copy [hidden email] on any reply.

Thanks,
Jordan

Hi Jordan,

Is this regular case or true only to some specific users? It would be cool if you can share some details on the issue - so we can check our side - style ID you use for tiles and Cloudmade iPhone library version? - this will help us to determine problem quickly.

Re: iPhone SDK issue on production app

Hi Oleg,

I'm not 100% sure it affects all users, but I have been able to
consistently reproduce it using the method below. (And consistently
work around it by starting the app for the first time using wi-fi.)

I believe the styleID is 3697.

Jackson - Do you have the Cloudmade iPhone library version?

Thanks,
Jordan

Thanks for initial info - we'll check the tiles for this style, waiting for library details...

Re: iPhone SDK issue on production app

Oleg Shaniuk-2
Thanks!

At the moment we have assumption about token authentification - when application starts for first time it needs to authenticate itself to CloudMade services with token, and sometimes (especially with 3G) - it doesn't success from the first time - so, it makes sense to encourage users restart the application. After retrieving, token is cached locally. Another reason could be the network load. The library is configured to cache the tiles - so, next time launches should work just fine.

Anyway - we still looking for the possible problems - if you will find some more details - please share them to us.

Re: iPhone SDK issue on production app

Jordan Anderson
Thanks for the investigation.

Even after restarting the application, you still get gray tiles. Based
on my tests, the only way to get the map tiles back is to delete the
application from the iPhone, reinstall the app, and start up the first
time with a wi-fi connection. It's almost as if the gray tiles are
being cached by the application so it thinks that it doesn't need to
download them again...
