reports of linux segmentation fault on "click2try"

Jody Garnett-2
Click2Try is running the foss4g live dvd on some VM hardware
somewhere; and contacted me about a "segmentation fault" when starting
udig 1.2-M6.
I logged in and was unable to reproduce the problem; but promised I
would pass it on to the devel list here...

(10:46:36 PM) aneel1: Hello Jody
(10:55:52 PM) jgarnett: hi
(10:56:09 PM) aneel1: I need you help again
(10:56:28 PM) aneel1: again i am facing segment fault issue
(10:56:47 PM) jgarnett: I am not sure I can help ...
(10:56:58 PM) jgarnett: is it a graphics card issue
(10:57:05 PM) jgarnett: actualy do you remember when you 1st run uDig
(10:57:13 PM) jgarnett: it talks about "some linux graphics drivers?"
(10:57:27 PM) jgarnett: perhaps you could go into preferences as it describes?
(10:57:49 PM) jgarnett: but really I am a java developer; and a
segmentation fault represents some really scary failure in the java
exe itself right?
(11:00:06 PM) aneel1: not sure
(11:02:34 PM) jgarnett: I am afraid you are stuck aneel1
(11:02:47 PM) jgarnett: go to release with a known problem; I am sorry
I cannot help more
(11:02:53 PM) jgarnett: do you have any clues?
(11:03:10 PM) jgarnett: normally when java fails there are a bunch of
useful thread logs or something
(11:03:13 PM) jgarnett: a core file?
(11:03:19 PM) aneel1: No jody. I am basically linux admin
(11:03:21 PM) jgarnett: is your VM crashing or just udig?
(11:03:34 PM) aneel1: just udig
(11:03:40 PM) jgarnett: Okay that is something
(11:03:46 PM) jgarnett: put it in your release notes I guess
(11:03:59 PM) jgarnett: If you send me an email I can pass it on to
the udig-devel list for you
(11:04:16 PM) jgarnett: it is happening during startup?
(11:04:21 PM) jgarnett: or just at random
(11:04:22 PM) aneel1: Yes
(11:04:40 PM) aneel1: Only at startup

Andrea Antonello
Hi Jody,
this doesn't say really much about the problem.

anything about the system, the java version, the whatever?

ciao
Andrea

Re: reports of linux segmentation fault on "click2try"

Jody Garnett-2
Agreed; it is a terrible "bug report".  I asked him to send me an
email - and we got a few more details.
The system is exactly the live DVD; adapted to work on their servers I
guess (so unbuntu).

My guess (based on this email) is they have some strange permissions?
----
Hello Jody,

uDig is throwing following error while startup.

error:
/usr/bin/udig: line 29:  3026 Segmentation fault      $PRGDIR/
udig_internal -data ~/uDigWorkspace $@

Note: If I have applied the "chown -R user.user /usr/lib/udig" command
at first time, then it works fine. Next onwards throwing above error

Please guide me to resolve this issue.

Regards
Aneel

Some notes:
- what is the content of /isr/bin/udig exactly
- when talking about chown, is really /usr/lib/udig meant or /usr/bin/udig?

I am trying to figure out how it is installed.

We installed Jgrass on a centralized system and had problems with some
file that could not be written, but they were on the JGrass side, not
udig. Once solved those, it worked well.

Re: reports of linux segmentation fault on "click2try"

Jody Garnett-2
Andrea you will need to go to the live dvd mailing list to ask these
questions; or download the ISO yourself to try out on the plane :-)

Since we are running a tutorial with the live dvd iso I recommend that one.

I have had no trouble with the live dvd iso; only when these guys are
running it on their VM setup.
